Frequently Asked Questions about Summer Child Care

All Families

Q: How soon should I begin looking for summer child care?

A: Now! Child care providers and summer programs usually have limited slots and registration deadlines. Don’t miss out on a space for your child. Waiting until school is out could mean your child misses out on fun and quality summer programming. Pathways LA recommends you start your search at least 30 days before the last day of school. Not every program qualifies, so call us with the program or provider name, and we will check for you.

Participating Pathways LA Families

Q: I am already enrolled in a Pathways LA program. Do I have to change my provider for the summer?

A: The short answer is no. If you are happy with your child care arrangement, there’s no need to change it. But, if you want your child to participate in a summer program while school is out, call Pathways LA. We can check if the program you have in mind is one of our participating providers. Have the provider or program name, phone number and address available when you call us.

Q: Does Pathways LA provide child care?

A: No. Pathways LA contracts with private child care businesses like child care centers and licensed family child care homes. We also contract with individuals who provide care for the children of a single family (this could be your family member, friend or neighbor!).

Pathways LA has access to a large network of providers. We can help you find an early care and education provider in your area that meets your family’s needs. Our Resource & Referral services are available to help you find a provider and give you tips for choosing the best one for your family. And, our R&R services are completely free! Q: How much does summer child care cost?

A: The cost for child care is set by each child care provider. Pathways LA can help you search for a provider within your budget. Call our friendly R&R staff at (213) 427-2710 for more information.

Q: Is there help available to cover the cost of child care?

A: Yes, help is available for parents who receive CalWORKs cash aid or have received cash aid in the past 24 months. Parents must be working, looking for work, going to school or attending a training program. Answer a few questions on our Eligibility Tool, and we will contact you if you qualify.

If you are a parent who has never received cash aid for yourself, you can apply to our waiting list. You will be notified if a spot becomes available. You can apply to our Eligibility List online through our Eligibility Tool.

Q: I am or was a CalWORKs parent, can I check my eligibility online?

Yes! Go to our Eligibility Tool and answer a few questions like your name, income, family size and zip code. Submit your information, and a Pathways LA Program Assistant will contact you if you are eligible.

Q: If I am a former CalWORKs parent, is there a deadline to apply?

A: Yes. You will want to check your eligibility before you reach the 24th month since your last cash aid payment. If you miss that deadline, you can apply to our waiting list. Use our Eligibility Tool to request an evaluation today!
